Real Salt Lake off to Southern California Saturday for Must-Win at Galaxy
September 30, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Real Salt Lake News Release
HERRIMAN, Utah – Real Salt Lake (11-11-10, 43 pts, 8th West) hits the road this weekend to face Western Conference rival LA Galaxy in Saturday’s 8:30p MT kickoff, the Claret-and-Cobalt needing a full three points in its penultimate 2022 MLS reg. season match to remain alive and control its destiny in the crowded MLS Cup Playoff qualification race.
Saturday’s match will be broadcast locally via KMYU (12 over the air, 22 satellite and 643 HD on cable), with streaming on the KSL Sports App, as well as ESPN700 AM radio. Spanish-speaking fans can tune in on KBMG Latino 106.3 FM, La Gran D 102.3 FM and KTUB 1600 AM for the local radio broadcast.
A year ago, RSL’s “Damiracle” in Kansas City deep into Decision Day stoppage time in Kansas City earned the Utah side the seventh and final Western Conference postseason berth, knocking the Galaxy out of contention on a tiebreaker. This season, RSL needs to win at LA Galaxy Saturday and potentially another win on Sunday, October 9 at home against Portland to qualify for its 12th postseason in the last 15 years.
Despite historic anemia away from home, RSL visits the MLS venue on the campus of Cal-State Dominguez Hills knowing that it has won more road games – 13 – there in Club history than in any other city. In what will be an atmosphere with playoff intensity, RSL has enjoyed its history as an underdog against the Galaxy, winning MLS Cup 2009 at a neutral site over David Beckham, Landon Donovan and a star-studded roster. RSL also knocked out the Galaxy in the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs en route to that year’s final, with LA eliminating the Utah side in 2011, 2014 and 2016.
Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni and staff welcome the return of six players following international duty, as MF Diego Luna (USA U-20), FW Jefferson Savarino & FW Sergio Cordova (Venezuela), MF Bryan Oviedo (Costa Rica), MF Braian Ojeda (Paraguay) and FW Rubio Rubin (Guatemala) each experienced successful stints with their national teams.
Tickets for next Sunday’s home match at America First Field against the visiting Portland Timbers are available for what should be RSL’s 17th consecutive sellout in MLS play can be purchased at www.RSL.com/tickets.
