Bedard’s Fifth Career Overtime Winner Gives Pats 4-3 Win in Edmonton

Edmonton, Alta. – The Regina Pats began their three game Alberta road trip Thursday at Rogers Place with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings, with Connor Bedard scoring his fifth overtime goal of his career.


The Pats lost a 3-1 lead early in the second period, and needed overtime as Connor Bedard scored his second of the game on the man advantage at 3:01 of the extra frame to give the Pats the win. Tanner Howe scored his first two goals of the season and added a pair of assists in the win. Drew Sim made his second straight start, stopping 22 of 25 in the win.

Luca Hauf (first WHL goal), Mason Finley, and and Ethan Peters replied for the Oil Kings. Gavin Hodnett had three helpers and Kolby Hay stopped 33 of 37 shots directed his way.

THE GOALS

First Period

REG 1-0 at 17:38 – Tanner Howe (1), unassisted // Bedard took the puck into the Oil Kings zone and while he was checked by the Oil Kings defenders, the puck ended up on Howe’s stick who fired home his first of the season past Kolby Hay to give the Pats the lead at 1-0.

EDM 1-1 at 18:05 – Luca Hauf (1), assisted by Gavin Hodnett and Marshall Finnie // The Pats turned the puck over in their defensive zone and Hodnett found Hauf who ripped a one-timer past Drew Sim to tie the game at 1-1.

REG 2-1 at 19:47 – Connor Bedard (4), assisted by Borya Valis and Tanner Howe // The Pats carried the puck into the Oil Kings zone with numbers. Bedard found himself cruising to the middle of the zone and fanned on a wrist shot, but the puck eluded Hay to give the Pats the lead late in the first period.

Second Period

REG 3-1 at 4:28 – Tanner Howe (2), assisted by Borya Valis and Connor Bedard // Bedard’s shot was blocked, but Valis was able to pick up the loose puck and found Howe at the top of the circle who ripped a one-timer past Hay to give the Pats a 3-1 lead early in the middle frame.

EDM 3-2 at 12:56- Mason Finley (2), assisted by Carson Golder and Gavin Hodnett (PP) // Golder’s shot from the sideboards was stopped by Sim but the rebound ended up on Finley’s stick and he connected on a powerplay marker to pull the Oil Kings to within a tally at 3-2.

EDM 3-3 at 14:06 – Ethan Peters (1), assisted by Luca Hauf and Gavin Hodnett // With the Oil Kings having the momentum, they controlled the puck in the Pats zone where Peters long distance shot appeared to deflect off someone and in to beat Sim to tie the game up at 3-3.

Third Period

No scoring.

Overtime

REG 4-3 at 3:01 – Connor Bedard (5), assisted by Alexander Suzdalev and Tanner Howe (PP) // Suzdalev teed the puck up for Bedard and he ended the game with a one-timed snipe from the point on the second of two overtime powerplays for the Pats.

* Tanner Howe (2G-2A) and Borya Valis (2A) extended their point streaks to three games to open the season. * It took 11 attempts, but the Pats finally scored on the powerplay. They have allowed one powerplay goal in each of the first three games of the season. * Alexander Suzdalev made his regular-season debut for the Pats, making him the 1,410th player in Pats’ franchise history. He also picked up his first career point on the overtime winner. * Tanner Howe’s four points (2G-2A) is a new career high. * Connor Bedard’s overtime winner is the fifth of his career.

UP NEXT

The Pats continue their mini three-game Alberta swing when they travel to Red Deer to face the Rebels on Saturday, October 1 before finishing up their trip on Sunday afternoon, October 2 in Calgary as they play the Hitmen. Once they finish their Alberta swing, the Queen City Kids will have one more road game in Brandon on October 5 before their next home contest on Friday, October 7 at 7:00 PM when they host the Winnipeg ICE at the Brandt Centre.
