2022 All-Star David Bednar Joins Indianapolis on Rehab Assignment

INDIANAPOLIS – The Pittsburgh Pirates announced today that 2022 National League All-Star, right-
handed relief pitcher David Bednar, will begin a rehab assignment and start for Indianapolis tonight. He is
the 14th big leaguer assigned to rehab with the Indians on 16 separate stints this season, including
infielders Josh VanMeter, Yoshi Tsutsugo and Kevin Newman, outfielders Anthony Alford, Ben Gamel,
Jake Marisnick and Greg Allen, and pitchers Heath Hembree, Sam Howard, Max Kranick, Dillon Peters
and Duane Underwood Jr. and Nick Mears.
Bednar, 27, was placed on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 3 (retroactive to July 31) with low back
inflammation. In 40 appearances with Pittsburgh this season, the closer is 3-4 with a 2.70 ERA
(14er/46.2ip), 63 strikeouts and 17 saves in 21 opportunities. He also pitched a scoreless ninth inning for
the NL in its 3-2 loss to the American League in the MLB All-Star Game.
This rehab assignment will mark the first Triple-A action of Bednar’s career after he was promoted from
Double-A Amarillo to San Diego to make his MLB debut on Sept. 1, 2019.
Bednar was originally selected by San Diego in the 35th round (1,044th overall) of the 2016 First-Year
Player Draft. He was traded to Pittsburgh from San Diego in a three-team deal that saw right-hander Joe
Musgrove go to the Padres while the Pirates added four prospects – catcher Endy Rodriguez, outfielder
Hudson Head, left-handed pitcher Omar Cruz and right-handed pitcher Drake Fellows – to their farm
system.
